  • Changes of physiological characteristic on photosynthesis in Malus seedling leaves during water stress were studied with polyethylene glycol(PEG 6000)treatment.The results were as follows:Under water stress.the binding of Chl-Pro was loosened with the changes of time and intensity of water stress.Net photosynthesis rate(Pn),stomatal conductance(Gs)decreased,intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci)increased,then decreased.The activities of SOD,CAT increased in the early period,then decreased.The 02-. generating rate and contents of H202 increased during water stress,the content of antioxidants carotenoid(Car)、ASA decreased.The changing extents of these parameters in the drought tolerant variety sieversii were lower than the drought resistive variety M.hupehensis. Under water stress.there are high negative significant correlation between Pn and Chl-Pro O ,H2O2 in M.hupehensis (Pamp.)Reld.and M.sieversii (Ledeb.) R0em. seedlings. With the duration of water stress。the excessive accumulati0n 0f 02-.。H2O2nduced the nonstomatal limitation.It played key role in the decline of the photosynthetic rate.

  • The diference of distribution in relative light intensity.characteristic of canopy space in fruit yield and quality,and their relationships were studied with the four diferent tree canopy shapes in the‘Fuji’ apple orchards.The results howed that the relative light intensity in excess 30% was high and the light istribution in every layers were uniform and parallel arrangement in open center shape.Th e canopy volume ratio of relative light intensity insuficient to 30% were 23.33% ,25.95%,32.86%,40.24%and output were 47.4,46.6,44.9,39.5 t/hm in open center shape,the reform open center from small canopy shape by one year,the reform open center from small canopy shape by two years and small canopy shape respectively.The open center shape were lower 17% in useless light space,higher 20% in output and greater in fruit coloration,solubility solid matter,solubility sugar,fruit shape index and ratio of sugar and acid than small canopy shape.The regression equations in relationships between factors of quality and relative light intensity were set up to obtain optimum range of relative light intensity for good quality in ‘Fuji’ apple.

  • Soil suitability for table and wine grapes in the dry valley of the upper reaches of Minjiang River was assessed.Based on the favorable climate.1eaf analysis and soil diagnosis were conducted.The results demonstrated that the differences of leaves nutrient attributed to the grape varieties. It iS the common characteristic for low nitrogen,high·middle phosphorus,high potassium and iron and zinc deficiency in this area. Th is results from the poor N and the abundant P and K in the soil on the whole. Moreover.the pH, texture and depth of soil meet the needs of vineyaed establishment. Thus,integrated analyses showed that it is necessary of equilibrium fertilization.s0il and water conservation,slope and soil amelioration for vineyard.

  • Interspecific hybridization was carried out with selecting sweet cherry as female parent and Chinese cherry as male parent.Embryo rescue system of hybrids were studied and identification of them Was also made.The results showed that:(1)setting percentage was highest when ‘Ehon’was female parent;embryo abortion happened 4 weeks after pollination in ‘Ehon’,3 weeks in ‘Napoleon’and ‘Hongdeng’;(2)1/2 MS medium supplemented with BA 2 mg/L,IAA 1 mg/L and vitamin C 10 mg/L was the optimal medium for germination and growth,1/2 MS medium supplemented with BA 2 mg/L,IAA 1 mg/L,AA 0.1 mg/L and vitamin C 1 0 mg/L Was the optimal medium for multiplication,1/2 MS medium supplemented with IBA 0.2 mg/L and vitamin C 10 mg/L was the optimal medium for rootage;(3)S-allele specific PCR、RAPD and leaf shape analysis showed that they were real hybrids.

  • In this study,genetic diversity in 70 accessions of Cucumis sativus L.from diferent countries or regions was assessed using AFLP markers,and the genetic relationship among the accessions was revealed by cluster analysis.Eight pairs of AFLP informative primers generated 425 scorable bands in total.66% of which were polymorphic.The average expected heterozygosity of AFLP loci among all accessions Was 0.376.The heterozygosity among Chinese accessions Was higher than that am ong exotic accessions.C.sativus L.vat. xishuangbannanesis Qi et Yuan and India wild germpalsm had some special loci that were not present in cultivars. rhe special loci in China cuhivars are more than that in the germplasm from America and Europe.rhe exotic germplasm also has some special loci that was absent in Chinese germpalsm.Three groups were clustered based on AFLP markers,namely C.sativus L.Var.xishuangbannanesis Qi et Yuan group,C.sativus Var.hardwicki group and cuhivars group.C.sativus L.Var.xishuangbannanesis Qi et Yuan Was the farthest from cuhivars.India wild cucumber was the farther from cuhivars.At certain distance,Chinese cultivars could be diferentiated from the exotic germplasm. Most south China ecotypes and North China ecotypes could be grouped into diferent subgroups but a few diferent ecotypes went into a Sal’ne subgroup.These results are beneficial for US to use various target variants to widen the genetic background of cucumber cultivars.

  • In order to reveal the characteristics of the“blunt with blossom”cucumbem (BBCs).we investigated the anatomical and cytological characteristics of the young stems and shoot tips of the BBCs by light microscopy(LM),transmission electron microscopy(TEM)and scanning electron microscopy(SEM)procedures.In BBCs plants。the node number。internode length and the stem diameter in shoot tops all reduced,and the elongation and expansion of the stem cells were inhibited.In contrast,the wall thickness of the collenchyma cell,the number of the vessel bundles.and the number of mature vessels in young stem increased respectively.Meanwhile,the shoot apical meristem cells avacuoled。and the nuclear envelope,tonoplast,plastid envelope and endoplasmic reticulum dissolved partially.In the studies on the role of BBCs。two positive cDNA bands were obtained through mRNA differential display.Northern blot analysis showed that one cDNA fragment homologous to the chloroplast ATPase subunit III Was down regulated and the other cDNA fragment homologous to the arginine deearboxylase(ADC)was up regulated in BBCs.

  • Promotion of Photosynthesis by 5-Aminolevulinic Acid (ALA)during and after Chilling Stress in Melon Seedlings Grown under Low Light Condition

  • Irrigation with exogenous 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA) significantly promoted leaf net photosynthetic rate(Pn)of melon(Cucumis melo L.‘Ximiya 1’)seedlings grown under low light irradiation,as well as the plants treated by 8 ℃ chilling stress.The leaves of the plants treated with 10 mg·L-1 ALA solutions showed hi gher apparent quantum yield(AQY),carboxylation eficiency(CE),chlorophyll(especially chlorophyl b)content,dark respiration and bigger stomata aperture but lower respiration under light.Furthermore,after seedlings were transferred to 8℃ chilling for 4 hours and then recovered at 25-30℃ for 2 hours,the photosynthesis of the control leaves was only 12%-18% of that before chiling,while that in the ALA-pretreated leaf was 22%-38%.which would further recovered in 20 hours to 76%-101% of the control before chilling treatment.If the seedlings were chiled for 6 hours.the control plants all died while the ALA-pretreated ones only showed a few injury symptoms in the leaf margin.The analysis also showed that the soluble sugar content of leaves in ALA-retreated plants Was very significantly higher than that of control,which might be partly responsible for the higher chiling tolerance.The evidence presented here sugested that ALA treatment might promote low light tolerance and chilling tolerance of plants.

  • In this paper inheritance of the chlorophyll content in immature skin of cucumber was investigated by applying the major gene plus poly—genes model of quantitative traits to a joint analysis of multi—generations(P1、F1、P2、B1、B2and F2).The results showed(1)the immature skin color of cucumber Was mainly controlled by nuclear genes.(2)the chlorophyll content in immature skin of the cross of HYBP×JNQHG Was controlled by two major genes with additive-dominance effects plus polygenes with additive-dominance effects(the E-2 model).(3)heritability values of the major genes of B1、B2 and F2 population were estimated as 83.94% ,62.12%and 86.98%respectively,while polygenes of those were 7.23%,18.15%and 5.86%.The results demonstrated that the chlorophyll content level in immature skin of the cross was mainly controlled by two major genes mixed with the efect of polygenes.The estimated additive efects of the first major gene(da )was much higher than that of the second one db.There were obvious diferences in genetic efects between the two major genes.The efect of db was only about 35.51% that of da,indicating that
    the contributions to the chlorophyl content level of the two major genes were not equal in the cross.The dominant efect of the two major genes,ha and hb were 2.7762 and 2.3392 respectively.

  • Carbohydrate contents were markedly diferent according to various storage temperatures,storage durations and parts of bulb.Bulbs stored at 6℃ had the highest starch level in bud and the lowest starch level in basal plate.However,bulbs stored at 10℃ had the opposite trend.Starch content in scales declined along with the decrease of storage temperature.Soluble sugar content in all parts of bulb and amylase activity of bud or scales decreased along with inerease of temperature.but showed an order of 6℃ >10℃ >2℃ in
    basal plate.An extremely negative correlation was observed between starch content and am ylase activity.The first 34 days of cold storage was the most active period of carbohydrate metabolism,which the bud developed rapidly.Total soluble sugar and amylase activity increased in relation with the decrease of starch.The extent of change in bud and basal plate was greater than that in scales,and in exterior scales Was greater than in other scales.The significant interaction between temperature and duration afected carbohydrate metabolism and sprouting of bulb.The results indicated that storage at 2℃ for 101 d Was the best treatment for the dormancyrelease.

  • Efects of the environmental factors on the anthocyanin content in spathes and of improving flower quality with Ca2+ ,GA3 treatments under weak light were investigated in Anthurium andraeanum.The resuits indicated that weak light was the main reason resulting in the lower anthocyanin content.Ca2+ (5.4 mmol· L-1),GA3(1.16 mmol·L-1)or Ca2+ +GA3,respectively,significantly increased the anthocyanin content in spathes and the phenylalanine amonia lyase(PAL)activity in stem of Anthurium under weak light.It is found that the calmoduiin contents and PAL activity in vitro stem of Anthurium were inhibited th diferent inhibitors of calmoduiin,RNA and protein,and the probable mechanisms of Ca2+ ,GA3were discussed.

  • Apple(Malus×domestica Borkh‘Fuji’)fruit was used to study the relationship between coloration and antioxidant enzymes.The contents of pigments and the activities of antioxidant enzymes in bagging and non-bagging fruits were measured at different time during ripening period.The results showed that the
    change of anthocyanin content was closely correlated with the activities of antioxidant enzymes.The activities of SOD and POD were high before coloration and then decreased obviously as red color developed.Bagging inhibited the activities of SOD and POD,When fruit was bag-removed in color-turning stage.the activities of SOD and POD increased sharply in the first 2 days.then dec reased significantly with the accumulation of anthocyanin from 2 days after bag.remova1.In addition,LOX activity Was closely corelated with the change of anthocyanin content.LOX activity appeared highest at 2-3 weeks before the color-turning stage,and declined with the accumulation of an thocyanin.

  • Relationship between a part of correlative traits and chlorisis index under Fe-eficiency stress were studied with Fe-efficient Malus xiaojinensisM.baccata and an interspecific F1 hybrids of xiaojinensis×baccata.The results showed that the correlation coemcients(r)among the chlorophyll concentrations,number of roots,pH value as percentage of control with chlorisis index were -0.8218, -0.8775,-0.2924 respectively.These indicates that the higher the chlorisis index of lines in the hybrids,thus,the more obviously the chlorophyll concentrations decreased,the less the no. of roots increased,the higher the pH value decreased.

  • The embryogenesis of persimmon was mainly studied on the varieties of ‘Kazusa’ and ‘Gaoan Fangshi’.Materials were dehydrated,embedded and cut in Paraffin wax.Th e results were as follows:Th eir ovules Was anatropous,biteguminous and tenuinucellate,archesporium one-celled and functioning directly as the megaspore mother cell.The tetrad ofmegaspores Was linear shaped,with the first cell from the chalazal end being functiona1.The development of the embryo sacs belongs to the ‘polygonum’type.The female gametophyte consists of egg apparatus,central cell and three antipodal cells at the mature embryo sac stage.The filiform apparatus of each synergid was at the micropyle end.The double fertilization belongs to the premitotic type of syngamy.Three antipodal cells were triangularly arrayed.The embryo develops to confornl the‘Solanad’type.Zygote began to divide after anthesis about two weeks.Th e development of endosperm conforms to the nuclear type.The primary endosperm nucleus began to divide 3 days after anthesis.Endosperms began to undergo cellular endosperm stage at the early globular emb ryo stage and almost completed at the cotyledonary emb ryo stage.Many abnorm al phenomena were observed during the development of embryo: Endosperm abortion and the division of zygote did not occur,etc.

  • In order to explore the reason for poor fruit set in sweet cherry grown in Shanghai area,the development of flower organs was investigated with 5-year-old sweet cherry(Prunus avium L.)trees which were planted in tlle research orchard of Shanghai Jiaotong University.Results showed that floral diferentiation and appearance of stamen and pistil during their development were normal for sweet cherry in Shanghai area.The microscopic observations revealed that poNen developed well and polen germination rate reached about
    50%.However.98.2% of ovary failed to develop,among which tllere was 26.3% of ovaries witllout ovule, and 71.9% of ovaries witll ovule but witllout embryo sac.The result indicated tllat undeveloped ovule and embryo sac are tlle main reason for poor fruit set of sweet cherry in Shanghai area.

  • To initially study the role of Nramp gene in resisfng iron deficiency stress,we analyzed this gene in Malus xiaojinensis Cheng et Jiang by using blot hybridization technique with Nramp gene fragment of wheat as probe.Southern blot result suggested that there was Nramp gene in the genome of Malus xiaojinensis.Northern blot confirmed that transcription ofthe Nramp gene is induced in both roots and leaves and strengthened in leaves by iron stress.A 752 bp fragment of Nramp gene was obtained by PCR from the genomic DNA,
    which has 83% identities to OsNramp3 of rice in amino acid leve1.The results lead to the prediction that Nramp gene of Malus xiaojinensis may play a crucial role in resisting iron stress.

  • The effect of different concentration Ce(NO3)3 from 1 to 100 mg·L-1 on the growth of‘ Red Globe’grape plandets in vitro were investigated.The results indicated that the optimum concentration of Ce(NO3)3 which promoted growth of plantlets was 1 to 10 mg·L-1.The growth performance of plandets in vitro as follows:The number and length of roots increased obviously.Fresh and dry matter of roots,stems and leaves as well as the contents of chlorophyll also increased.Survival rate of transplantation increased due to roots activity which could improve mineral nutrition absorption ability of plantlets.While,high concentration of Ce(NO3)3 (100 mg·L-1 )in medium obviously inhibited plantlets growth.

  • Three types of callus,which present different regeneration capacity,were established in the tissue culture of strawberry.The and types of callus possessed higher regeneration capacity while I type of callus had much lower.In the freshly induced calli,the and types of callus had 5-fold and 9-fold higher contents of intracellular H202,and 3-fold and 4-fold higher level of 02-.,compared with the I type of callus,respectively.Also,the calli and had much higher activities of antioxidant enzymes than the callus I. During the subculture,H202level increased gradually and 02-. rapidly,while the activities of antioxidant enzymes gradually declined.The ability of expression of totipotency in calli decreased,especially the callus I lost the ability after 12 week subculture.The results indicated that the reactive oxygen species might play a dual role in the regeneration of strawberry calli.On the one hand,a certain level of ROS may have a positive effect on the regeneration,and on the other hand,high level of ROS is inhibitory for the expression of totipotency in calli.

  • Winter cultivar ‘Yidianhong’ and spring cuhivar ‘Duanye 13’were used to study the carbohydrate content of stem apices and leaves during the progress of floral bud differentiation. Germinated radish seeds were subjected to chilling at 5℃ for 20 days.After low temperature treatment.all seedlings were transplanted into glasshouse under warm (>15℃)and long photoperiod (16 h)growth condition. Amounts of total soluble sugars,sucrose and starch were assayed during the various floral bud differentiation stages.The following conclusions were drawn:(i)111e amounts of total soluble sugars.sucrose and starch during the floral bud differentiation,either in stem apices or in leaves。showed a similar tendency between the spring cuhivar and the winter cuhivar.(ii)111e total soluble sugar content increased during the initial stages of floral bud differentiation and then decreased,while the sucrose and starch content increased steadily until floral bud differentiation was completed.   • A hydroponic experiment was carried out to study the effects of different Cd levels on the growth and the activities of antioxidant enzymes in two cultivars of Brassica campestris L.ssp.chinensis(L.) Makino.Cd 1 mg·L-1 didn’t significantly afect the growth and chlorophyll content of both cultivars (except the shoot dry mass of‘ 'Hangzhou Youdonger’),Cd 10 mg·L-1 significantly inhibited the growth and leaf chlorophyll content of both cuhivars(except the root dry mass of‘ 'Huqing 1’).,nle generation of 02-. and H2O2,content increased under Cd exposure,and mal0ndialdehyde(MDA)accumulated.The activities of catalase (CAT) and peroxidase (POD) of‘ Huqing 1’ and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) of ‘Hangzhou Youdonger’were significantly increased at Cd 1 mg·L-1.Cd 10 mg·L-1 significantly decreased the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD),CAT and APX,and significantly enhanced t}Ie activities of dehydroascorbate reductase (DR) and glutathione reductase (GR) in both cuhivars.

  • With 14 random pfimem,the RAPD analysis was used to determine the genetic relationships between 17 Neo-tuberosum clones and 7 common cuhivars of potatoes(Solaaura tuberosum ssp.andigena).The results indicated that the Neo-tuberosum clones were with abundant genetic diversity. One hundred and seventy unambiguous bands were observed.in which 130 were polymorphic bands.The average polymorphism rate was 75.26%.Phylogenetic relationships of 24 genotypes were discovered based on phylogenetic tree by use of UPGMA method.which were divided into 4 groups.The Neo-tuberosum and the common cultivars were clustered into different groups respectively.

  • This study examined the efects of various start fertilizers on poinsettia growth and nutritional status in different portions of poinsettia.Results of the study show more favorable growth and higher quality of poinsettia grown in fast-release-fertilizer (FRF) than in slow-release-fertilizer (SRF).The ratio of NO3--N
    and NH4+-N in FRF did not significantly affect the growth of poinsettia. Concentrations of N,P,K,Ca,Mg, Cu and Zn in green leaves were comparable to the recommended standards while Fe and Mn concentrations exceeded the levels.

  • Efects of diferent plant growth regulators on the vase life and preserving property of Nymphaeft stellata cut flower were studied.The results showed that 50 mg·L-1.GA3treatment produced the best resuit for the preserving property of N.stellata cut flower and could extend the vase、ire of N.stellata cut flower highly significantly as compared to the control(distilled water).It could increase flower diameter,straightened flower stems and prolonged time of the existance of flowers.It also could keep fresh mass of flower stem and retarded the increase of pH value and relative plasmalemma permeability in petals of stellata cut flower.Efects of 10 mg·L-1 PP333 and 10 mg·L-1 CCC treatment were not significantly as compared to the control1 mg·L-1 6-BA and 1 mg·L-1 NAA treatment were not suitable for vase-holding of N.stellata cut flower.

  • An eficiency system of propagation jn vitro of Phlox subulata L.was developed. The optimum sterilization of young shoots was 10 minutes with 0.1% HgCl2. The rate of shoots forming from 1 mm shoot tips reached 83.3%. The multiplication cogmcient of in vitro decapitated shoot was 50% higher than
    the multiplication coefficient of whole shoot.For cultivars ‘Daniel cushion’and ‘Tamaryuu’.the multiplication coeficients reached 18 and 8 respectively. On the half strength MS medium supplemented with IBA 0.2 mg/L.the rate of rooting of in vitro shoots of P.subulata L. reached 80%.The survival rate of
    plants transplanted on a large scale was more than 90% .The eficiency of multiplication of Phlox subulata L.was afected significantly by genotypes.

  • The explants from seed segments of Veronicastrum sibiricum (L.)Pennell were used to establish culture in vitro and regeneration system.The experiments showed that the best medium for callus induction from seed segm ents was MS with 3 mg·L-1 6-BA and 0.3 mg·L-1 NAA.Th e medium supplemented with 2 mg·L-16-BA and 0.2 mg·L-1 NAA was favorable to the diferentiation and proliferation of buds, and each explant regenerated 12-18 plantlets about 60 days.The growth of roots was best on 1/2 MS medium with supplement of IBA 0.5 mg·L-1

  • ‘Jingzaojing’is a hybrid euhivar derived from ‘Queen of Vineyard’בThompson Seedless’.The ripening time of berry is in the end of July in Beijing.The fruit cluster is conical,weighing 427.6 g on average. The average mass of a single berry is 2.5-3 g. The berry is egg-like,greenish-yellow and seedless with crisp flesh,juiey and a bit of Muscat aroma when fully ripened,with 16.4% 一20.3% soluble solid and 0.47%-0.62% titratable acid.It has medium productivity and resistance to diseases.

  • Yan An 1’ is a new pear variety,selected from the colony of Pyrus ussuriensis Maxim. in Yanshan.The soluble solids content is 16.4% ,the titratable acid content is 1.02% ,and the vitamin C content is 10.52 mg·kg-1, the culture has all average fruit mass of 109.4 g and matured in late September to early October in Qinhuangdao.Its flesh is fine and tender in texture with the aroma and flavor of Anli.

  • ‘Yanliang Xiangzao’,a new dried-jujube variety with late ripening,selected from Lintong Chizao jujube orchards in Yanliang District,Xi’an.The fruit is oblate shape,red-black colour,and middle large,the average fruit mass is 9.5 g,maximum fruit mass is 15.0 g,the average core mass is 0.4 g.It ripens
    in early-middle October in Yanliang.Th e fruit is uniform,attractive,good quality fruit,applicable to dry,and it has 46% of the dried-rate.The fresh-fruit has a middle-thick peel with high toughness and crack-resistance. The dried-jujube with plump-fruit has a good elasticity and highlight color.Its cultivated region is in north China with 11.0-13.0℃ of the annual average temperature and 550-650 mm of the annual rainfall.

  • ‘Zhongmi 1’ is a new cuhivar of Actinidia deliciosa selected from the wild in Funiu mountain area,He’nan province.It has the characteristics of large fruit size with small core and less seeds,green flesh.delicious flavour and fine quality,early fruiting and high yield,vigorous growth. ‘Zhongrni 1’ has a high ability of the resistance to the diferent stresses such as drought,cold and grow good in mountain area with poor soil.Harvested in October, ‘Zhongmi 1’ is a superior cuhivar for the flesh fruit market.

  • ‘Shu Lü’ is a hybrid developed by crossing two non-heading Chinese cabbage SW-13 and SU-124(Ai×Su)characterized by upstanding plant figure,bunchy waist,nearly round and light green leaf, half-round and white-green petiole. It’s with high quality and beautiful figure. The mass ratio of blade to petiole is 0.67. The average mass of single plant is about 0.40 kg. It is highly resistant to anthracnose,and resistance to TuMV.downy mildew and ahernaria leaf spot with heat.resistance.It is suitable for growing in summer,autumn and winter in the regions where green-stem cabbage is popular.

  • ‘Small tomato Jinong 2’ is a F1 by crossing the variety red cherry with small tomato introduced from Denmark.It has unlimited branches and common lear and it grows vigorously.The first inflorescence is situated between the eighth and ninth node and each inflorescence bears 20-40 tomatos.The fruit is red and round and it is very tasty.Each weighs 10-15 g. It is resistant to disease and is suitable for open field cultivation and greenhouse cultivation.
