Abstract: eIF4E ( eukaryotic translation initiation factor 4E) family genes play important roles against virus from infecting plants. A complete cDNA of 995 bp from papaya was cloned using the method of RT-PCR and RACE. It was a isoform eIF4E, so itwas named CP-eIF ( iso) 4E (GenBank accession No. FJ595992).
The predicted CP-eIF ( iso) 4E protein had 206 amino acids, in which the active site was high conservative in primary structure, and the predicted virus-resistance site was located on the surface of cap-binding pocket in3-D structure. Semi-quantitative RT-PCR analysis indicated that CP-eIF ( iso) 4E expression was lower in leaf and higher in petal of papaya.
