Abstract: The effects of ethylene and its inhibitor,1-methylcyclopropene(1-MCP)treatments on the flower opening, ethylene production, and the expression of ethylene biosynthesis- and perception-related genes in cut rose‘Samantha’were investigated. The results showed that 1-MCP pre-treatment or post-treatment substantially inhibited ethylene-caused increase of ethylene production in petals, gynoecia, and receptacles. 1-MCP treatments also substantially inhibited the expression of Rh-ACS3,Rh-ACO1 and Rh-ETR3 genes in petals and gynoecia, but of only Rh-ETR3 in receptacles. The results indicated that the effect of competitive inhibition of 1-MCP on ethylene occurred mainly in petals, gynoecia and receptacles, and the effect was substantial, regardless the treatment was performed before or after ethylene treatment.
