Abstract:

The fruit-type papaya cultivar‘Guireyou 1’is an excellent new cultivar derived from a natural mutation of the dual-purpose（fruit and vegetable）papaya cultivar‘Yiyuan 8’. The plant grows vigorously with a single，erect，unbranched stem reaching 170.4 cm in height and 9.6 cm in basal diameter. Fruit are uniformly pear-shaped，averaging 0.95 kg in weight，19.0 cm in length and 10.5 cm in width；the flesh is 3.2 cm thick，bright orange-red，contains 12.0% total soluble solids and offers a sweet，aromatic flavour. Regional trials yielded an average 62.97 t · hm^-2. Combining strong drought and heat tolerance，‘Guireyou 1’is recommended for commercial cultivation in tropical and subtropical regions such as Guangxi，Guangdong，Fujian and Hainan.
