Abstract: The growth of cucumber was strongly affected by soil water content. Either leaf number or leaf area was significant different among the water treatments. At the beginning of water stress , the free protein and proline content increased in leaf , this trend disappeared at time prolonged when the soil moisture remained at the 50 %- 60 % soil capacity. The content of Spd (spermidine) and Put (putrescine) in leaf and root of the plant increased with the moisture decreasing in the soil , but there was no significant difference of Spm (spermine) among the three treatments. ABA content of cucumber leaf was high when the soil water content was low.

Key words: Cucumber ( Cucumis sativus L. ), Soil moisture deficiency, Proline, ABA, Polyamine
