A New Cultivar‘Yinhongjiao’of Zanthoxylum bungeanum

Abstract: ‘Yinhongjiao’,a new Zanthoxylum bungeanum cultivar,is developed from wild germplasm resources of Zunyi native Chinese prickly ash as the maternal parent in Guizhou Province. This process included initial selection,cultivation trials,reselection and observation of biological characteristics,regional trials and quality assessment. The cultivar exhibits intense aroma,strong numb taste,vigorous growth,and early fruiting. The trees are strong,the posture is semi-open,the new shoots are strong,and the crown is loose. The fruits possess well developed oil glands,and display a light red color. Fruit clusters are pyramidal in shape,bearing 30-60 fruits per cluster. The fresh fruit weight averages 97.89 g per 1 000 fruits. The pericarp is oily,containing 70 mL · kg-1 of volatile oil and 34.40 g · kg-1 of total numb-taste components,contributing to an exceptionally intense fragrant and numb taste. The cultivar is suitable for cultivation and promotion in the northern and northwestern of Guizhou Province with elevation of 600-1 500 m.
