Attenuation of Cbilliog Efect on Photosynthesis of Satsuma Mandarin(Citrus unshiu Marc.)by NaHSO3 Application

Abstract:Chilling stress led to decline in net photosynthetic rate(Pn),photochemical eficiency (Fv/Fm) 0f PSII and photosynthetic electron transport rate(erR)in satsuma mandarin leaves.Intensity of chlorophyll millisecond delayed light emission(ms.DLE)ofthe leaves,which reflects the transmembrane proton motive force,and ATP level in the leaves were also lowered by chilling stress(2℃ 10 h in the dark).Smearing the leaves with5 mmol/L NaHSO3 before exposure to clliUiIlg was found to Ilg about less decrease in these panuneters of the chilled plants.Thus,Pn and Fv/Fm were decreased by 52.7% and 24% ,respectively。as a result of chilling in the smeared leaves as compared with the corresponding 64.2%and 35.6%decrease in the contro1.Lowering of ETR an d level following chilling stress was practically eliminated by NaHSOs trealment. Evidently, the harmful effects of chilling Oll photosynthetic apparatus an d photosynthesis were substantially alleviated by the application of NaHS03 in citrus,which may be potentially useful in fruit culture practice.
