Stage Identification and Morphological Types of Bud Maturity or Floweringin Paeonia lactiflora Cultivars

Abstract: One of the keys to growing and harvesting fresh cut peony flowers is to harvest them at the optimum stage of development. On a successive observation of two years on 15 cultivars of Chinese herbaceous
peony (Paeonia lactiflora) , the bud growth and development through maturing to floweringwas divided into 7 stages, corresponding to 7 flowering grades of 0 - 6, and morphologically identified as 2 basic types, the unfold-petal type and the open-top type, whose difference obviously existed in the 2nd to 4 th stages ( or 1 - 3 flowering grades) when the budswere coloring which were critical for harvesting cut-flowers.
