Abstract: To study the effects of silicon on the growth and photosynthetic haracteristics of melon ( Cucumis melon L. ) , two cultivars were grown in a hydroponics system containing 1. 0 mmol#L- 1Si( as sodium silicate) in early spring under low temperature, 10- 15 % . There were no effects of supplementary silicate on shoot growth; however, the fresh weight of root and the root/ shoot rat io in both varieties were significantly increased. Plants grown in the presence of Si showed a significant increase in early yield, which was resulted from earlier flowering, lower fruiting node and decreasing fruit abortion. Addition of silicon in the solut ion caused a significant increase in chlorophyll contents in both varieties and Si contents in leaves and roots, but an obviously reduction in transpiration.
