Abstract:

Citrus Huanglongbing(HLB),caused by the phloem-restricted bacterium‘Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus’(CLas) and transmitted by the Asian citrus psyllid(Diaphorina citri),leads to severe fruit developmental defects including asymmetrical shaping, abnormal coloration(“red nose”symptom),and drastic quality deterioration. CLas infection disrupts sugar-acid metabolism, volatile compound biosynthesis, and secondary metabolic pathways, resulting in accumulation of limonoids and characteristic flavor loss. Recent advances reveal that CLas-secreted effector proteins(e.g.,SDE1,SDE3)manipulate host immune proteases and autophagy pathways to coordinately regulate programmed cell death and ROS homeostasis, thereby driving fruit symptomatology. This review synthesizes the tripartite regulatory network linking fruit phenotype, quality traits, and molecular mechanisms under HLB pathogenesis, highlighting multi-omics approaches as pivotal tools for deciphering CLas virulence strategies, which may inform future resistant cultivar development and sustainable management practices.
