Abstract: The interspecific crosses of asparagus bean(Vigna unguiculata L. ssp. sesquipedalis)and its related species of rice bean[V. umbellata(Thunb.)Ohwi & Ohashi]were carried out. The pest-resistance level and pod traits of the parents and their 7th generations were identified and evaluated. The results showed that the pest-resistance levels of rice bean varieties were generally higher than that of asparagus bean varieties in the field. Meanwhile,41 individual plants showing resistance to pest were selected from 363 lines containing all kinds of segregation in F6 generation of interspecific crosses between asparagus bean and rice bean. They constituted F7 generation. The field experiment results revealed that the pest-resistance levels of F7 offspring were separated significantly and seven recombinant lines with high resistance(HR)level were re-selected. Finally, according to the characteristics of pod-related traits such as pod length and grain density, two within the seven lines with HR level to Prodenia litura Fabricius and Spodoptera exigua Hübner at vegetative growth stage, and similar pod traits to asparagus bean were selected. Therefore, the germplasm innovation of asparagus bean pest-resistance was realized.
