Abstract: Phenolic compounds are the secondary metabolites in plants, which play important roles in antioxidation,anti-bacterial,stress resistance, etc. However, phenolic compounds are also the substrates of explant browning in tissue culture. Plant browning is a recalcitrant problem for plant tissue culture, and it severely affects woody plant. Phenol oxidation catalyzed by oxidases is the directly caused browning. In this paper,we summarized phenolic compounds synthesis and classification, metabolic enzymes, methods of identification, and how the phenolic compounds affect woody plant tissue culture at first. And then the methods of decreased or depressed plant browning were suggested. This paper could provide theoretical guidance for the woody plant tissue culture.

Key words: woody plant, phenolic compound, tissue culture, polyphenol oxidase, browning
