  • Citrus Huanglongbing(HLB),caused by Candidatus liberibacter,is the most devastating disease of citrus for which no cure has been found. Almost all known citrus varieties including those from their closely related genera can be infected by the bacteria. HLB has been a hot topic of citrus researches
since the disease was discovered in America. In this paper,we are trying to summarize generally the recent advances in the researches of HLB pathogen and pathogen-host interactions. Topics on HLB control and breeding for HLB-resistant/tolerant citrus materials were also touched.

  • Abstract ( 815 ) HTML ( 1959 ) PDF (278KB) ( 1959 )
  • Bacterial spot caused by Xanthomonas is a bacterial disease that severely affects tomato production. In recent years, the rapid changes of the races in the pathogen of the disease, particularly the spread of X. gardneri, facilitated the work on genetics of resistance, mapping of genes, and marker-assisted
breeding for resistance to the disease in tomato. To date, three genes and five QTLs conferring resistance to race T3 as well as three QTLs for resistance to race T4 have been mapped, some of them have been finely mapped,marker-assisted selection system has been established, and varieties with resistance to race T4 have been developed. This paper will summarize these newest progresses, analyze the existing issues, and discuss the promise of investigating the genetics of resistance to bacterial spot and its application to tomato breeding. This will provide some information for breeding of resistance to bacterial spot in tomato.

  • Abstract ( 786 ) HTML ( 1684 ) PDF (217KB) ( 1684 )
  • Crossbreeding is a valuable method for producing new plant varieties with desirable
characters. So far, this traditional method is still the major approach for breeding new Paeonia varieties.
This paper reviewed the progress in Paeonia crossbreeding program. The typical achievements via
intrasectional crossing mainly include“Lutea Hybrids”,“P. lactiflora Group”and“Herbaceous Hybrids”,
while“Itoh Hybrids”represents the achievement of intersectional crossing. These distinctive genotypes
were mainly developed by breeders from Europe,America and Japan. In comparison, only limited
achievement was obtained by Chinese breeders. To promote future Paeonia crossbreeding program in
China, we suggested more efforts be made in the five fields,i.e.,protection of wild germplasm resources,
introduction of elite genotype, efficient selection of parental combination,in-depth study on mechanism of
crossing barrier and consistent performance of crossing experiments.

  • Application of Heavy Ion Beam Irradiation in Ornamental Flowers Breeding
  • KONG Ying, BAI Jin-Rong, SHANG Hong-Zhong, WANG Nai-Yan
  • Acta Horticulturae Sinica. 2013, 40(9): 1837-1845.
  • Abstract ( 996 ) HTML ( 2268 ) PDF (253KB) ( 2268 )
  • Heavy ion beam irradiation is an emerging radiation mutagenesis technology. Compared
with traditional radiation such as X-rays and gamma rays, heavy ion beam provides a high linear energy
transfer(LET)and relative biological effectiveness(RBE). This technique induces mutations at a higher
rate and wider mutation spectrum. When irradiated, the sensitivity of different parts and developmental
stages of different plant materials varies. Radiation ion source commonly used is C,N,Ne etc. Through a
combination of tissue culture, materials processing,re-irradiation and genetic engineering, this approach
has been applied in more than 20 ornamental plants, including chrysanthemum, carnation, verbena, torenia
etc. Many novel mutations and varieties have been obtained, some of them have been commercialized with
large economic benefits. Heavy ion beam technology is an excellent tool to improve mutation breeding of
    horticulture plants with high efficiency.
