  • The effect of magnesium deficiency on photosynthesis of longan (Dimocarpus longana Lour.) seedlings was studied using hydroponic experiment. Magnesium def iciency led to the decline of the contents of chlorophyll and carotenoid, the capability of light energy absorption of chloroplast as well as maximum photosynthesis at both light and CO2 saturation conditions. On the other hand, the apparent quantum yield, carboxylation efficiency and both light and CO2 compensat ion points turned out to become higher as magnesium become deficient . The results of chlorophyll a fluorescence induction measurement showed a decrease of Fv/ Fo, Fv/Fm and Fd/ Fs in magnesium deficient longan leaves, indicating that primary light energy conversion ability and potential photosynthet ic activities of PSI were inhibited. The decrease in F684/ F736 under magnesium deficiency condit ion suggested that the regulat ion of excitation energy distribution between PS 􀀂 and PSII was reduced. The discussion was made on the responsive mechanism of longan to magnesium deficiency.

  • Abstract ( 1570 ) HTML ( 2511 ) PDF (108KB) ( 2511 )
  • Activities of pectolytic enzymes and cellulase in peaches 〔Prunus persica (L. )
Batsch cv. Baifeng〕were determined during softening and development of woolly breakdown. Enzy-matic response to pre-warming and intermittent warming was also analyzed. Start of fruit softening seemed to be connected with the activity increase in PE , PGand cellulase. However , the level of PE
and PG activities was not significantly related with the fruit firmness. Both endo2PGand cellulase activities were significantly negative correlated with the degree of woolly breakdown ( r = - 0. 9408 , r =- 0. 9234) . The essential aspect of chilling injury known as woolly breakdown induced by low temperature stress was the abnormal degradation of cell wall pectin , which was not only controlled directly by pectolytic enzymes but also influenced largely by cellulase. Alleviating chilling injury with the treatment of pre-warming or intermittent warming was responsible for the prevention from irreversible
damage to endo-PGand cellulase from low temperature stress and thus guaranteeing the normal process of pectin degradation.

  • The content of sucrose , glucose , fructose and the activities of sucrose-metabolizing enzymes (acid invertase , neutral invertase , sucrose synthase and sucrose phosphate synthase) in the fruits of Citrus unshiu Marc. cv. Miyagawa wase were measured. It was observed that compositive
action of sucrose-metabolizing enzymes (net activity of sucrose-metabolizing enzymes) was one of the important factors affecting sugar accumulation in fruit . The transition of sugar accumulation and net activity of sucrose-metabolizing enzymes was the period from the end of fruit enlargement to the onset of fruit coloring in fruits. Before the stage of fruit coloring , the net activity of sucrose-metabolizing enzymes was below zero , sucrose accumulated slowly in fruit . During stage of fruit coloring , the net activity of sucrose2metabolizing enzymes was positive , and sucrose accumulated rapidly in fruit . During the stage of fruit full ripe the net activity of sucrose2metabolizing enzymes was negative in peel tissue , and accumulation of hexoses was higher in comparison with edible tissue.

  • Vegetable seeds of 6 species were ultra2dried to 3. 0 % - 5. 5 % moisture content with 4 drying methods , heat drying at 45 ℃, silica gel drying at 25 ℃, low2temperature drying at 15 ℃ and freeze2drying at - 20 ℃. After 10 years preserved in sealed aluminum bags at room temperature (20 - 35 ℃) the seeds of most species in original moisture content (7 % - 10 %) lost total germination capacity except eggplant . All species of ultra2dried seeds by silica gel , freeze2drying and heating drying methods maintained very high germination capacity which almost same as the original viability tested 10 years ago. The result indicate that the three drying methods can be used safely to ultra dry the 6 species of vegetable seeds. Viability of the vegetable seeds was not effect by the drying temperatures were applied in this experiment . Moisture content of the seed was key index for long-term storage at ambient temperature and 2. 5 % - 4. 5 % MC seems to be equal to the 6 species. Ultra-dried seeds of these species could be conserved safely at common temperature for at least 10 years. This could be an economical way for conservation of seeds of plant genetic resource.

  • Acacia dealbata is a famous kind of economical and oremental trees in Australia. In this test , shoot tips taken from big trees and seedlings , little leaves from young plants , epicotyls from seeds were collected as explants that were studied on tissue culture and rapid propagation. The results
showed that all four kinds of explants have been induced callus formation. Buds and shoots can be induced on callus except little leaf’s callus in morphogensis. The medium MS + 6-BA 6 mg/ L + NAA 0. 1 mg/ L + NaH2PO4 30 mg/ L may increase sprouting bud rate from callus. However , the medium
MS + 6-BA 2 mg/ L + NAA 0. 1 mg/ L + NaH2PO4 30 mg/ L may increase shoot growing rate. Plantlets from test tubes grew better on the growth medium perlite + peat (1∶1) than on other components in acclimatization stage.

  • Abstract ( 1521 ) HTML ( 1001 ) PDF (133KB) ( 1001 )
  • Off year trees of ‘Biji’ bayberry were used to determine the effects of GA3 spraying on lignin level and its correlated enzymes activities in leaves during the period of flower bud physiological differentiation. At the initial stage of flower bud physiological differentiation, the activity of PAL increased to maximum, then followed by the activity of PPO. At the peak of flower bud physiological differentiation, both the activity of POD and the level of lignin increased to maximum. During the period of flower initiation, both the activity of POD and the content of lignin decreased. The treatment with GA3 spraying inhibited the activities of PAL, PPO and POD, slowed down the biosynthesis of lignin, surppressed the differentiation of flower buds and almost completely prevented the formation of flower bud. We concluded that GA3 might inhibit the formation of flower bud by dropping down the accumulation of lignin.

  • Using Robertson Navel (madarin rootstock ten years) as a testing material , the activity variance of enzyme related to organic acid metabolism and its relationship with the organic acid accumulation were studied. The result shows : There is a significantly positive correlation between the activity of Citrate synthase ( CS) or Phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC) and organic acid , Their correlation coefficient ( r) are equal to 0. 916 0 and
    0. 877 9 respectively. This not only proves that CO2 fixation is a main pathway of organic acid synthesis in Navel orange fruit ; but also proves that CS and PEPC are the key enzymes of organic acid synthesis , and efficiently inhibiting CS and PEPC activity could reduce the organic acid content of orange fruit.

  • High temperature (40 - 50 ℃) for 1 - 2 hours induced resistance to the scab pathogen , Cladosporium cucumerinum in cucumber plants. The high temperatures of 40 ℃2 hours or 45 ℃1 hour was found to be the optimal
treatment for the induction of resistance. Plants inoculated with C. cucumerinum just at the time of 4 hours after heat shock of high temperature exhibited increased resistance to the fungus. A 24 hours interval from heat shock of high temperature to inoculation allowed for development of maximum resistance. Eighteen cultivars were tested by heat shock of
high temperature , and it was found that different cultivars expressed distinct induction resistance to C. cucumerinum. Some cultivars exhibited induced resistance in the treatments of 40 ℃2 hours and 45 ℃1 hour. Some cultivars exhibited induced resistance in only one of the two treatments , while others had no expression of induced resistance.
