  • We try to establish a new peach descrip tor system based on the statistics analysis, international Peach Descriptor from IBPGR in 1984, and Chinese peach descriptor in 1990. Fruit quantitative characters of 282 - 491 peach cultivars were investigated atNational Peach Genetic Collection in Zhengzhou
    in China from 1986 - 2002. Those characters includes average fruit mass, stone mass, soluble solid content, soluble sugar content, soluble acid content, vitamin C, firmnesswith shin and firmnesswithout skin.Grade index and reference cultivarswere given by statistical data for peach descrip tors. These grade indexes were recorded on 1 - 5 scale. In generally, two reference cultivars for each grade were given, one USA cultivar, another Chinese cultivar. We try to use these as the reference cultivars, which are planted or used by
    breeders widely in China.

  • The effect of different fertilizers (chicken dung, cattle dung, compound fertilizer) applied to root on mineral nutrient balance in different plant part of two-year-old potted app le tree (Fuji on Malus hupehensis Reld stock) under NaCl stress was studied and the resultswere following: compared with control ( no fertilizer) , compound fertilizer treatment decreased the Na contents in different parts of apple tree underNaCl stress, chicken dung take the second p lace and cattle dung had no effect. The order of relative increase ofNa in different parts of apple tree under NaCl stress compared with no NaCl was phloem of trunk, vegetative shoot > xylem of trunk > root, it showed that Na was mainly accumulated in upper parts of app le tree. Under NaCl stress compound fertilizer treatments increased the contents of N, K, Fe and Zn in different parts of apple tree, chicken dung increased N, P, K, Ca, Mg, Fe and Zn, and cattle dung had no significant effect. Compound fertilizer had the obvious role formaintaining the balance underNaCl stress of N, P, K, Fe and Zn to Na, chicken dung had the relatively obvious role for P, K, Ca and Fe, and a certain role for N, Mg and Zn, cattle dung had no role to all elements. This showed that compound fertilizer and chicken dung were propitious to maintain the nutrition balance of app le tree under NaCl stress. The best obvious change part of element/Na rate under NaCl stress was vegetative shoot, the second was root and phloem of trunk, and the lastwas xylem. This showed that the nutrition balance of p rosperous life activity parts of apple tree was influenced by NaCl stress largely.

  • The effect of defruiting on source leaf net photosynthesis ( Pn) and related physiological response was investigated on ‘Yanhong’peach trees ( Prunus persica) during the fruit stone hardening and final fruit rap id growth stage. The results showed that Pn, stomatal conductance (Gs) and transp iration ( E)
    in source leaves decreased significantly while leaf temperature ( Tleaf ) increased from defruiting trees as compared with those from fruiting ones. There was, however, no significant difference of substomatal CO2 (Ci)
    between fruiting and defruiting treatments. The effect of reducing the sink activity by defruiting treatment on Pn, Gs, E and Tleaf appeared during 9: 00 and 16: 00. The relationship between Pn and Gs was significantly positive only when Gswas less than 60 mmol·m- 2 ·s- 1. The difference of Pn between fruiting and defruiting increased with the increasing difference of Tleaf between defruiting and fruiting treatments. It is suggested that an increasing Tleaf , resulting from the stomatal closure, may be a key factorwhich leads the decrease of leaf Pn in reducing the sink activity in fruit trees.

  • The shoot-tips of papaya was used to study ultrastructural changes during cryopreservation by vitrification. Ultrastructure of cryopreserved cells was observed by using the transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results showed that the plasmolysis became more and more severe during the pretreatment and dehydration after the shoot-tips were precultured. Meanwhile, it was able to improve the desiccation and freeze tolerance. Cellswere mainly damaged during the freezing and thawing process. Some cells were extensively damaged, including cell walls, cellmembranes and nucleus envelopeswere lethally injured during cryop reservation period, which may account for the death of some cells after cryop reservation. On the other hand, there were also many cells, which were basically similar to that of control material. The cells were able to repair such damage and regain their normal ultrastructure within three days in culture. They could survive and regenerate plantlets after cryopreservation.

  • Oligochitosan is an important elicitor that can induce resistance of plants against pathogens. The process and sites of oligochitosan binding to strawberry cells were investigated by the treatment of using labeled oligochitosan with fluorophore 2-aminoacidone and detecting the emission fluorescence by alaser scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM). Oligochitosan can bind to membrane of strawberry p rotop lasts and cell walls in few minutes. the results indicated that p rotop lastsmembrane and cellwalls are the main binding of oligochitosan. The binding of oligochitosan to binding sites is special.

  • Two types of cabbage cultivars ( heat-sensitive and heat-tolerant) were used asmaterial to study the difference of photosynthesis under short-term high temperature stress with high light. Results showed that photosynthetic rate of‘Daniuxin’was app roximately 30% higher than that of‘Wufen 8’under 1200 mol·m- 2 ·s- 1 PFD when leaf temperature was 40℃. Compared with at 28℃, their photosynthetic rates decreased 7% and 24%, respectively. Under 40℃, the quantum yield of PSII electron transport (ΦPSII) and maximal
    photochemical efficiency of PSII in the light ( Fvp/Fmp) decreased with the increase of light, but non-photochemical quenching (NPQ) increased continuously, its slow-component ( q I) remained app roximately 10% of
    NPQ, the increase of fast component ( qf) is the main factor leading to the increase of NPQ, indicating that xanthophyll cycle2dependent‘high energy’quenching was the main mechanism for effectively dissipating the excess excitation energy. However, there were no significant differences inΦPSII, Fv'/Fm', NPQ, qf, qI between two types of cabbage cultivars. In addition, no significant difference was observed in maximal photochemical efficiency of PSII (Fv/Fm) , intercellular CO2 concentration (Ci) , photoresp iratory rate (Pr). Therefore,the difference of photosynthetic rates between two cultivars under short-term high temperature stresswith the high lightmight result from non-stomatal limitation which had no relation with photoreaction process.

  • Selenium (Se) is an essential element for antioxidation reactions in human and animals. Inorder to study its biological role in higher plants, two cultivars (‘Zhongjiao 7’and ‘Naishijiao’) of pepper(Capsicum frutescens L. ) were cultivated in pot filling peat and vermiculite with Se concentration of 0, 0.3,
    0.6, 0.9 and 1.2 mg·kg- 1. When the flower buds appeared, the plants were transferred into climatic room and exposed to high temperature stress by three steps ( 25℃ 2 h→35℃ 2 h→40℃ 2 h). Then the leaves were harvested for measurement of chlorophyll and malondialdehyde (MDA) contents and activities of four antioxidant enzymes. The results showed that selenium improved the content of total chlorophyll and increased the activities of glutathione peroxidase ( GPX) and peroxidase ( POD) about 11.5 times and 63.6% , respectively, whereas decreased the activities of superoxide dismutase ( SOD) and catalase (CAT). In addition, selenium also decreased the MDA content of leaves by 36%. The general trends of the tested parameters in two cultivars of peppers no distinct difference is showed. It is suggested that selenium play an important regulative role on the activities of antioxidant enzymes under high temperature stress, thus decrease the content of MDA and improve the tolerance to high temperature stress of pepper plants.

  • Pollen grains of three cultivars‘Longshu 3’, ‘Favorita’and ‘Shapody’of potato were treated following a three2step p rocedure: 1. Starvation treatment at 4 - 7℃ for 3 - 5 d; 2. Hydration at 4℃ for 20 h; 3. Heat shock at 36℃ for 20 - 100 min and osmotic shock for 40 min. After the three2step treatment the exine could be detached along the germination furrowswith the detachment rate of 34.5%. The germination rate of the nake pollen of cultivars potato could reach 38.3% in a modified medium containing 15% PEG (MW 8000) , 5% sucrose, 0.01% H3BO3 , 0.01% LH, 100 mg/L PVP and K3'salts ( pH 8.5). The results showed the three-step procedure established in this experiment was a useful tool for detaching the exine of potato pollen and understanding the biological role of exine in pollen germination and pollination.

  • Through cDNA-AFLP analysis of Four pools with different phenotypes of Six avirulence genes in germinating cysts of Phytophthora infestans, totally 85 candidate transcript derived fragments (TDFs) were obtained, including 20 for Avr1 , 28 for Avr2 , 16 for Avr32A vr102A vr11 , and 21 for A vr4 , respectively. One candidate TDF of linkage genes Avr3-Avr10-Avr11 (A11T13Avr3-10-11S157 ) and two candidate TDFs of A vr4 (A24T19Avr4S122 and A24T24A vr4S142 ) were identified through verification of expression of these TDFs in 20 P. infestans individuals. The results of Blast analysis showed that A11T13A vr3-10-11S157 was homologous with EST G001F101XT7 deposited in the Phytophthora germinating sporangium EST library, A24T19 A vr4S122 was identical with part of EST PH051G101XT7 deposited in the Phytophthora germinating cyst EST library while A24T24A vr4S142 had 98% similarity to
    EST PH051G101XT7. That would facilitate cloning of full-length Avr4 gene by in silico cloning along with RACE (Rapid Amplification of cDNA Ends) technique.

  • A new improved approach of testing powder method for rapidly determining nitrate content in fresh vegetable was studied. The results showed that the absorbance value at 538 nm had a good linearitywith the nitrate content in the range 0 - 20 mg/L with the relationship coefficient 0.9999, the recovery 97.7 % - 104.5% , and RSD 2.71% , when the extracting solvent 2% HAc in current method was substituted by H2O, the ratio of testing powder consisting of citric acid monohydrate, manganese sulfate monohydrate, P-aminobengene sulponie acid anhydrous, N2 (1-naphthyl) ethylenedianine dihydrochloride and zinc powder was 30∶4∶1.6∶0.8∶1, and the quantity added was 0.1 g. The nitrate contents in eleven vegetable species determined by this method were not significantly different from those determined by the national standard test method.

  • Five cold stress gene fragments were isolated through cDNA-AFLP from Volvariella volvacea and were designated as VC1, VC2, VC3, VC4 and VC5 respectively. DNA sequence results indicated that these five DNA fragments had 247 bp, 219 bp, 172 bp, 350 bp and 171 bp respectively. BLAST search results showed that VC1, VC2, VC3, VC4 and VC5 had no significant homologous nucleotide sequences found in databases. Postulated p rotein sequences of VC1, VC2 were homologous with the hypothetical protein of
    Neurospora crassa and the putative AMP deaminase of Oryza sativa, espectively. Postulated protein sequences of VC3, VC4 were homologouswith the glycogen synthase kinase three alpha in Danio rerio and the hypothetical protein in Leuconotocm esenteroides respectively. But postulated protein sequence of VC5 had not found the significant homologous p rotein sequence in the databases yet.

  • In vitro morphogenesis pathways and anatomic differences of eight kinds of calli in Anthurium andraeanum ‘Jolanba’at different culture stages or on the culture media supplemented with different cytokinins were researched. The results showed that the main pathwaywas indirect organgenesis, and adventitious shoot primordium derived from the subsurface layers of callus. Somatic embryogenesiswas also found both inside and on the surface of callus. Eight kinds of calli differed in types of nodule and number and distribution
    of meristematic cells. Number and distributing of meristematic cells was well related to shoot differentiation.Callus with more meristematic cells or outer-distributed meristematic cells could differentiate more shoots.Thidiazuron (TDZ) was showed a good effect on the induction ofmeristematic cells and somatic embryo. Nicking and making incision on callus surfaceswas helpful for shoot differentiation.

  • A synthetic Bt (Bacillus thuringiensis) Cry1Ac gene was introduced into the genome of cut flower chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum morifolium ) cultivar‘Japanese Yellow’in vitro with explants of internodal segmentsmediated by Agrobacterium tum efaciens. Results of PCR and Southern blot analysis indicated that Cry1Ac gene were integrated as one copy into the genome of chrysanthemum. Six transgenic lineswere obtained in total. Upon insect bioassay using Heliothis arm igera (Hubner) in the pot2culture and in petri dishes, two of the screened plants were demonstrated to be very highly resistant to the insect larvae, the corrected mortality of insect larvae was higher than 90% in five days. One individual line showed strong resistance,
    the corrected mortality of insect larvae was higher than 80%. Three transformed lines showed relative strong resistance, the corrected mortality of insect larvae was ranged from 44.7% to 60.9%.

  • Based on the studies of literatures, field investigation, introduction and cultivation on the genus Begonia Linn. in Yunnan, the geographical distribution, basic morphological characteristics, ornamental values and their cultural characters were summarized in this paper. It was indicated that Yunnan is very
    rich in Begonia resources. There are 101 species ( subspecies and varieties) of Begonia were recorded in Yunnan. Among them, 72 species are endemic to Yunnan. B egon ia iswidely distributed in the whole province but its natural distribution center is located at SE Yunnan The lowest altitude of its distribution of the genus in Yunnanis only 90m and the highest altitude is 3400 m above sea level. Among the known species from Yunnan, 50 species are rhizomatous Begonia, 28 species are erect stemmed Begonia and 23 species are tuberous
    Begonia. The distribution of rhizomatous Begonia is from 90 m to 3000 m. This type of Begonia requires relatively higher temperature and moisture in cultivation and many species are suitable for pot plant for foliage
    ornamental purpose. The erect stemmed B egon ia is distributed from 100 m to 3200 m and requires high temperature and moisture in cultivation. They are suitable for pot and bed p lants. The distribution of tuberous Begonia is from 720 m to 3400 m. Most species of tuberous type of Begon ia donpt require higher temperature and moisture in cultivation and they are suitable for pot plant and breeding purpose.

  • The cell numbers and sizes in fruits were investigated and changes of endogenous hormones and polyamines contents in fruits were studied during fruit development period in Red Fuji apple on different dwarfing interstocks (B9 , M26 and SH38 ). The results indicated that the cell numbers and sizes in fruits were influenced by different dwarfing interstocks types but the times of cell division had no change. The trends of endogenous hormones and polyamines contents were not affected by dwarfing interstocks. The changes of endogenous IAA, GA3 and Put contents on three types of dwarfing interstocks all showed a single peak curve. And the endogenous ZR and spd contents both kep t declining. During the most part of this period, the contents of endogenous hormones and polyamines on B9 and M26 were markedly higher than that on SH38.

  • The mesocarp cell division and expansion of‘Okubo’peach 〔Prunus persica (L. ) Batsch.‘Okubo’〕fruitwere compared after the mature trees were subjected to the treatments of flower thinning and non-thinning. The results showed that the intensive cell division of ‘Okubo’peach fruit mesocarp did not cease until sixweeks after anthesis. Flower-thinning promoted the cell division of the fruitmesocarp at the early stage of fruit development and increased the number of mesocarp cell layers. The p romotion of mesocarp
    cell division by flower thinning might account for the increase in the mesocarp thickness within three weeks after anthesis and the increase in the fruit size at harvest.

  • Using seven-year ‘Muscat Hambourg’ cultivated with pergola and vertical trellis systems,changes of relative contents of volatile compounds in maturity were examined with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC /MS). Results indicated the relative content of esters had increased sharply, but that of ketones and aldehydes had decreased. The general relative content of terpenes tended to drop alongwith the delayed p icking stage. The content ratio of terpenes varied from p icking time. Potential terpene ratio for earlier
    maturation was remarkably higher than that of free terpene, but nearly the same later. The relative content of esters in grapeswith vertical trellis system was higher than that of pergola system during latermaturation, while the relative content of ketones, aldehydes and terpenes lower. There was a higher relative content of Eucalyptol and Beta-Myrcene in grapes with pergola system than that of vertical trellis system. Eucalyp tolmainly existed in the form of potential terpene and Beta-myrcene in free terpene.

  • In this paper, the effect of MA (modified atomosphere) storage on respiration, ethylene production, flesh firmness, relative membrane permeability, total soluble solid and activities of PG and CX of nectarines were studied. The results showed that MA storage significently inhibited PG (polygalacturonase)
    and CX ( cellulase) activities, decreased the respiration rate and the ethylene production, delayed the respiration peak and the ethylene peak, and slowed down the decrease in the flesh firmness and the increase in the relative membrane permeability. However, there was no remarkable effects of MA storage on the total soluble solids. There is a potential application of MA storage in the nectarines.

  • The effect of high oxygen atmosphere on Chinese bayberry (Myrica rubra Sieb. et Zucc) fruit decay and qualitywere investigated. Freshly harvested Chinese bayberries were placed in jars continuously ventilated with air orwith 40%, 60%, 80% or 100% O2 at 5℃ for 12 days. While the quality parameters
    of total titratable acidity, total soluble solids, reducing sugar and pH value were only slightly affected by the superatmospheric O2 levels. Treatments with 60% - 100% O2 significantly inhibited fruit decay incidence;there was a decrease in decaywith an increase in oxygen concentration. The 100% O2 treatmentwas the most effective in controlling fruit decay. Fruit treated with 60% - 100% O2 or higher also exhibited significantly higher vitamin C content and lower levels of weight loss, MDA and anthocyanin content. Data obtained suggest that high oxygen atmosphere may provide a potential alternative for postharvest decay control on Chinese bayberry fruit.

  • Correct identification of self2compatibility genotype in sweet cherry is important to the breeding. By far, there have been no molecularmethods to differentiate between self-incompatible S4 haplotype and self-compatible S4’haplotype. In this report , on the basis of the sequence of the S4 haplotype-specific F-box protein gene (SFB 4) of sweet cherry in GenBank, a pair of primers were designed, by which PCR was performed to amplify the SFB 4 gene from total DNA of self-incompatible varieties ‘Rainier’ and ‘Jiahong’and the SFB 4’gene from self-compatible variety‘Stella’. The PCR products were sequenced and a difference between SFB 4 and SFB 4’geneswas found. Compared with the SFB 4 gene , there was a deletion of four nucleotides ‘TAAA’ in the SFB4’gene. The primers BFP 200 and BFP 201 were designed on the ground of the difference between the SFB 4 and SFB 4’genes, which only amp lify the SFB 4’gene. Therefore, using the primers BFP 200 and BFP 201, the difference between the SFB 4 and SFB 4’genes of sweet cherry was displayed, the self-incompatible S4 haplotype and the self-compatible S4’haplotype were distinguished successfully.

  • An efficient and reliable method for shoot regeneration from leaf disks of strawberry (Fragaria ananassa Duch ‘Toyonoka’) was established. The optimum medium for shoot regeneration was MS supplemented with thidiazuron ( TDZ) 1.5 mg·L - 1 and Indole-3-butyric acid ( IBA) 0-4 mg·L - 1. Different color films had great effect on the shoot regeneration of strawberry. The presence of red and green films induced the maximum percentage of shoot regeneration ( > 95% ) and the highest number of buds per explant( > 25). However, the blue and yellow films inhibited the shoot regeneration of strawberry. The difference of films spectrum was focused on 300 - 700 nm. The light intensity of red and green films was weaker than yellow, blue and white ones. Dark treatment could effectively p romote shoot regeneration rate. In contrast, maximum percentage of shoot regeneration (100% ) and the highest number of buds per explant (9.05) were observed with dark treatment of four weeks.

  • Factors influencing the induction of callus and somatic embryogenesis were studied with immature embryos of Ginkgo biloba. Highest rate (53.6% ) of somatic embryo genesis was obtained on MK medium containing NAA 1.0 mg·L - 1 +BA 1.0 mg·L - 1. Maximum number of embryoids observed on callus was 38 with 3 mm plus embryos and 34.5% embryoids could be developed into plants. Darkness is not suitable for somatic embryogenesis. The growth and development of somatic embryos were promoted by adding 10% CM into the medium.

  • By using principles of quantitative genetics, genetic effects of five fruit characters of summer squash were analyzed. The results indicated that genetic patterns of all five characters fitted additive and dominant model. Different degree of dominant effects and additive effects existed among five characters of summer squash in three combinations. Most characters of fruit length ( FL) , fruit diameter ( FD) , fruit index ( FI) and fruit flesh thickness ( FFT) in three combinations showed positive dominant effects that were close to or beyond corresponding additive effectswhile fruit stalk length ( FSL) had negative dominant effect. Broad and narrow heredity abilities of FL, FD and FI were bigger and that of FSL and FFT were smaller.

  • The effects of hypoxia treatment on growth of leaves, free, conjugate and bound polyamines levels were studied in leaves of muskmelon seedlings in a hydroponic culture. The results showed that the growth of the seedling leaveswas inhibited under hypoxia stress; but the contents of free, conjugate and bound Put, Spd, Spm in leaves with hypoxia stress treatment were significantly higher than those of normal aerate treatment. The increasing degrees of growth, contents of free, conjugate and bound Put, Spd, Spm of‘Xingguang’were more than those of‘Xiyu 1’under hypoxia stress. It suggested that higher contents of free, conjugate and bound PAs might be involved in regulation of hypoxia tolerance in muskmelon seedlings.

  • The changes of rhizosphere microbial populations of grafted eggplants with different rootstocks and cropping systems were studied. The results showed that the populations of rhizosphere actinomyces and fungi of grafted eggplants increased; and that bacterial populations decreased. A /F increased and B /F decreased. In addition, the total rhizosphere microbial numbers of grafted eggp lants increased. In both rotation cropping and monoculture cropping, rhizosphere actinomyces populations of grafted eggplants were significantly higher than those of the control at 0.01 level, but bacterial populations of the controlwere significantly higher than those of grafted eggplants at 0.01 level. In monoculture cropp ing, the ratio of rhizosphere bacteria and actinomyces of eggplants decreased, and that of fungi increased.

  • By SMART RACE RT-PCR strategywith gene specific p rimers, the full-length cDNA of a cytochrome P450 gene named RsCYP86M F was cloned from Raphanus sativus L. The cDNA was 1818 bp, it encompassed a open reading frame (ORF) with 1581 bp encoding 526 amino acid residues. the sequences of deduced amino acids encoded by cytochrome P450 genes showed the high identity of 90% between Raphanus sativus L. and Brassica campestris subsp. chinensis, and also highly conserved domains of function. It had a conserved domain of cytochrome P450 cysteine heme-iron ligand signature ( FNAGPRLCIG) , which is typical of cytochrome P450, and the structure domains such as N-glycosylation.

  • The effects of different nitrogen levels on yield, nitrate content, and nutrition quality of‘Hanzhong Chinese chive’ (Allium tuberosum Rottler) were investigated under hydroponics. Results showed that at concentration range of 2 - 20 mmol·L- 1 nitrogen level, the content of nitrate reductase increased with increasing nitrate content in leaves. At 8 - 12mmol·L- 1 , yield, vitamin C, soluble sugar, protein content relatively high, nitrate and cellulose contents were relatively low. Taking yield and quality asmeasurement index, the optimal nitrogen concentration for‘Hanzhong Chinese chive’under hydroponics was 8 - 12 mmol·L - 1.

  • The physiological and biochemical changes of photo-assimilate translocation in swelling gall of the Zizania latifolia Turcz. were studied with two typical varieties in autumn. The results showed that fresh mass and drymass of gall increased rapidly. The contents of main compositions of non-structural carbohydrate ascended on the whole and descended at anaphase of swelling. Sugar content of‘J iangshujiao's’was higher than that of‘Fenghongzao’. Activity of acid invertase (A I) was high in early stage of development of the gall and then descended rapidly. A I activity in ‘Jiangshujiao's’gall was higher than in ‘Fenghongzao’but N I activity was lower in ‘J iangshujiao's’gall. Activities of sucrose synthase in direction of cleavage were higher than those in synthetic one and keep higher in anaphase. Both activities in ‘Fenghongzao’were higher than those in ‘Jiangshujiao's’. Content of (Z + ZR) was highest and descended distinctively, second was GA4 , third was IAA and descended relaxedly. Contents of GA3 and ABA were very low and hardly changed. Hormone contents in ‘Fenghongzao’were higher than those in ‘Jiangshujiao's’. It was considered that it was exceptive that fresh mass and dry mass increased rapidly while activities of physiology and biochemistry decreased rapidly at Zizania gall's swelling. Also there had diversities in different varieties.

  • Preliminary Study on the Relations between Membrane Permeability, Endogenous Hormones and Cold Resistance of Ivy

  • The ivy (Hedera nepalensis var. sinensis) plants growing in open field or greenhouse were used as the experimentalmaterials. The changes of the semilethal temperature and the endogenous hormones in the leaves through the winter period were determined by electric conductivity and ELISA methods. The results showed that the cold resistance and the limit of endurance to the low temperature were different for the ivy plants growing under different cultivate conditions. For the p lants growing in open field, it possessed more stronger cold resistance, and its levels of endogenous hormones changed more obviously than that growing in greenhouse, such as the increase of the content of abscisic acid and the decrease of gibberellic acid. During the winter period, the changes of the contents of ABA and GA, especially the ABA /GA were associated closely with the cold resistance of ivy growing in open field.

  • Seedlings of Lilium longiflorum‘Snow Queen’were treated in chambers with temperatures of 35℃/30℃, 37℃/32℃, 39℃/34℃ for 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 and 32 h, respectively. The changes of the morphology and contents of proline, MDA, soluble protein as well as relative electrical conductivitywere determined. The results showed the contents of proline and MDA, the relative electrical conductivity increased significantly by 37℃/32℃ treatment. Those indexes had a remarkable correlation and could be taken as heat tolerance indexes. The change in morphology of the seedlings under 37℃ treatment was also consistent with that of physiological indexes. The physiological indexes of 35℃ and 39℃ treatment didnpt have significant correlation.

    temperatures and treatment periodswere rep resented using Logistic equation. The results showed that REC in2
    creased as a S2curves with the decreased of temperature when the treatment time was longer than six hours.
    According to these S2shaped curves and the Logistic equation, we could calculate the semilethal temperature
    (LT50 ). The LT50 of C. h iem alis ‘Shishi Gashira’was between - 1215℃ and - 14℃, which may be an
    important index of cold tolerance in C. hiem alis.

  • The photosynthetic characteristics of five species of Cymbidium were studied by gas exchange and analysis of chlorophyll fluorescence. According to the light saturation points, the light compensationpoints, the CO2 saturation points and the CO2 compensation points, the five species of cymbidium have the characteristics of C3 plants. The photosynthetic rates were between 3.0 - 5.9μmol·m- 2 ·s- 1. The results also demonstrated that the photosynthetic rateswere largely affected by the concentrations of the CO2 while the CO2 concentrationswere below 2 000 μmol·mol- 1. And there were also some differences among the photosynthetic capacities, the apparent quantum yields and the carboxylation efficiencies in leaves of the five species.
    The light saturation pointswere between 350 - 650 μmol·m- 2 ·s- 1 indicating that all five species of Cymbidium were shade acclimated plants, among which C. goeringii and C. ensifolium have relatively lower shade endured capacities; while C. sinense and C. longibracteatum have relatively higher shade-endured capacities; and C. faberi has relatively moderate shade-endured capacity. The light activation of photochemical reaction
    and photochemical efficiencies after the activations in the five species exhibitd obvious differences, which maybe correlate with the originally ecological conditions, the acclimations and the evolutions of different species of cybidium.

  • A new cultivar ‘Lüshuai’ tested as 384-8 was selected from seedlings of ‘Golden Delicious’after 17-year systematic investigation and observation. The average mass is 245 g. The peel is yellow-green. The soluble solid content is 12.8% and the acid content is 0.34%. The fruit develop ing time is 95 d and the ambient temperature storage time is 15 d. The tolerance to canker and rough bark of tree is high.

  • ‘Huafu’ is a new variety of high qualities selected by anther-culture of ‘Fuji’with the technology of haploid-breeding. The fruit, with 236.5 g of the average mass and 0.86 of the shape-index is nearly round, the color of the peel is yellow covered with red striations; the flesh texture is yellowish white and crisp and fine with 9.2 - 9.96 kg/ cm2 of hardness, 16.9% of soluble solid and 13% of soluble sugar. The fruit ripened around October 20 with middle sweet and sour and a little scent.

  • ‘Red Star’peach is a yellow flesh hybrid applicable to fresh and canning processing from ‘Fenghuang’ בCanning Peach 14’. Its average fruitmass is 177 g, the largest fruitmass is 285 g. The plant is vigorous. The fruit is yellow-flesh with a deep red surface. The canning product is golden color, very fine flesh and very strong aroma. It ripens at the beginning of August in Shaanxi and yields 34.59 t/hm2.

There are about 60 days from transplant to harvest. Leaf head is little overlap, with 28.3 cm height and 19.6 cm diameter, 1.8 - 2.5 kg per head. Soft leave ratio is 40.86% , and net head ratio is 73.9%. There is not any elongation of growth top under 12℃ for 11 days at 4 - 5 leaf stage and formed strong head. This variety has idenificated by Shaanxi province agricultural seed administration station in 2004.

  • ‘Summer Heading 1’ is a new summer heading Chinese cabbage hybrid, the female parents is weak compatibility strain (90-1-1-2-3-94-3) , the male parents isweak compatibility strain (90-1-5-1-2-94-6). It takes about 70 - 75 days from sowing to maturity, its head shape index is 1.71. The plant form is orderliness. It has green leaves. The single plant mass is 2.0 - 2.5 kg. It also has good quality and merchandise. This variety is disease resistant against spongy rot.

Harvest about 60 days after transplanting, curd iswhite and tight, average mass is 1.0 kg, the yield is 26.6% - 43.3% higher than that of the control variety ‘Fenghua 60’, the yield is 30000 kg/hm2.

  • ‘Daimeiren’is a kind of early maturity minitype watermelon. Its growing season is about 80 days. The fruit is oval, deep green and has stripes on its surface. Flesh color is red. Fruit soluble solid content is 11%. The average single fruit mass is 2.1 kg and the mean yield is 37 - 42 t/hm2. ‘Daimeiren’watermelon has good quality with high resistance and storability.
